Mentor actually means “wise advisor” and originates from the Greek story “Homer’s Odyssey” about Mentor, friend of Odysseus and adviser of Telemachus. Whilst Odysseus, king of Ithaca, fights in the Trojan War he entrusts Mentor with the responsibility of taking care of his household which involves overseeing it and teaching of his son Telemachus.

The meaning of the word “Mentor” has evolved to mean trusted advisor, wise person, or teacher. Richard Branson has long encouraged mentorship as a tool for helping to develop entrepreneurs. Examples of mentoring relationships from history include:
• Plato was mentored by Socrates
• Thomas Jefferson was mentored by George Wythe
• Warren Buffet was mentored by Benjamin Graham
• Marc Benioff was mentored by Steve Jobs
• Marissa Myers is mentored by Larry Page and others
Mentoring is a rudimentary form of human development in which one person invests time, energy and personal know-how in supporting the growth and abilities of another person.
Everyone of us has a birth right to realize our potential. Mentors through their endeavours and work help entrepreneurs to move towards that realisation.

Mentoring is motivated by love.
Brands must empower their community to be change agents in their own right. To that end, they need to take on a mentoring role. This means the brand provides the tools, techniques and strategies for their customers to become more effective marketers in achieving their own goals.
If you aren’t born here, to be a real New Yorker, you have to bring your talent, be a successful mentor, and support the New Yorkers who made the city by giving back.
